Erik Satie (b. Honfleur, France, 1866, d. Paris, France, 1925). Full title: 3 Morceaux en forme de Poire (à 4 mains) avec une Manière de Commencement, une Prolongation du même & Un En Plus, suivi d’une Redite [3 Pieces in the Shape of a Pear (for [piano] four-hands) with an A Way to Begin, an Extension of the Same & an In Addition, followed by a Repetition.] Composed in 1903 and published by Rouart, Lerolle (Paris, 1911). Arranged by Wesley Hall for flute, oboe, clarinet, and strings (violin I and II, viola, cello, bass). The arrangement may be played with one player on each string part or a small string section. Score and parts are available for purchase from the arranger. For information contact me at [email protected] Three Pieces in the Shape of a Pear is Satie’s first work for piano four-hands (two players at the same keyboard). It consists of three movements numbered I, II, and III that are framed by two prefatory movements (“A Way to Begin” and “Extension of the Same”), and two concluding movements (“In Addition” and “Repetition”). “Extension of the Same” and “Repetition” do not extend or repeat any material from previous movements. Only movement I is original to the set. For the other movements Satie used material from previous works, some of which were unfinished at the time he reworked them for inclusion in the set. “A Way to Begin” is from Satie’s music for a Rosicrucian play by Josèphin Pèladan and is the only movement in the set for which the original source is noted in the piano score: “Gnossienne” from Le fils des étoiles [The Son of the Stars], 1891. More information about the work is at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trois_m... Many thanks to Jay, Kerianne, Rias, and Sarah.
