Babylon Berlin might just be the best least known series out there. This most expensive German production features the investigations of detective Gereon Rath as he arrives in 1920's Berlin to uncover a plot that goes deeper and deeper the further he goes down the rabbit hole. Based on the novels of Volker Kutscher, the series explores the setting of the Weimar Republic as it suffers the aftermath of World War I and the many uncertainties that followed in its wake. From communists to gangsters to right wing nationalists, Berlin is beset on all sides by threats that the Berlin police has to face. Both the series and the books are an incredibly intriguing window into a Germany that we very rarely see represented in media or fiction.
