"I think about slide as something that goes up to the 12th fret. Anything above that is trick. It's goofy, it's showmanship---it's irritating, almost." (Ry quoted in Nov '92 Guitar Player) I guess every rule has its exceptions, but it is really really hard to play in tune that far up the neck. Here are the basics of playing the first 66 bars of Ry's derivative instrumental take off on "It's Gonna Work Out Fine" by McCoy and McKinney. I think "I Think" added to the title is pretty funny. Note the bar of 5/8 time, rhythmic variations and double-stops. The baritone guitar has the 1st and 6th strings lowered a whole step, and the bottleneck is in open D. The song is in E.
