Smokestack Lightning - Is Everyone Playing It Wrong? Yes!

Everyone (that I've heard / seen) since Howling Wolf's original 1956 recording is playing this song backwards; Hubert Sumlin's famous guitar phrase starts on beat 4, not beat 2. I play the song with the 'Wolf," Sumlin and Willie Dixon's original phrasing and timing and explain four proofs for my argument. 1. An early '60s video of the band playing the song in England where Howling Wolf counts the song in 1,2,3, and quotes the harp lick from Little Walter's "My Babe," a lick that definitely starts on the 4. If one counts from that point they well see that Sumlin plays the 'Smokestack' phrase on 4. 2. Willie Dixon's bass line is a classic alternate bass pattern built on the root and 5th, and the first bass note (the root) matches up with Sumlin's 3rd fret high E string "G" note which is the second note of the lick, the first being open "E" which starts on beat 4. 3. The drums on the '56 recording feature a repeated double 8th snare note combo on the "& of 3" and beat 4, a very common pattern in blues, country and rock. A drummer would almost never do this combo in repeated fashion on the "& of 1" and beat 2. The live version mentioned above also features this. 4. The song's phrasing / timing is very similar to "Spoonful" which nobody mistakes as starting on beat 2. Howling Wolf in England '64    • Howlin' Wolf "Smokestack Lightning" L...   Howling Wolf (live in Chicago?) '71 'Smokestakck' groove / but different lyrics at 13:44. The song 'Evil' is actually earlier in the video.    • Howlin Wolf - Live 1971   Bands / Musicians which play the ‘Smokestack Lightning' phrase on the wrong beat - The Yardbirds (Eric Clapton) The Animals Jimmy Page (on live quote on “How Many More Times” John Fogerty (quotes 'Smokestack' in "Suzy Q." Manfred Mann Grateful Dead Bily Gibbons / Larkin Poe Aerosmith George Thorogood The Allman Brothers (w/Hubert Sumlin) Warren Haynes Eric Gales The Strypes The Delta Bombers Ghost Hounds The Cat Burglars * I mention that Willie Dixon wrote 'Smokestack.' Evidentially it was Howling Wolf himself. Dixon wrote 'My Babe' and 'Spoonful.'
