American and Chinese officials attacked each others' policies in their first in-person talks since the Biden administration took office in January. Among those at the table were US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan, Chinese State Councillor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Beijing’s top diplomat, Yang Jiechi, a Communist Party politburo member and director of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs Office. In blunt public remarks, Blinken said the US wants to address the issues of Xinjiang, Hong Kong and Taiwan, which he noted were topics of concern by US allies. Yang responded by criticising what he said was the US’ struggling democracy and poor treatment of minorities, while criticising Washington’s foreign and trade policies.
