World Trade Center FDNY Responder Scott S. and Family Member Ann V. share their personal stories of September 11th in their 9/11 Tribute Museum presentation of We Were There on stage at the National September 11th Memorial Museum. Scott was a firefighter on 9/11. He made it to the scene shortly after the South Tower collapsed, and speaks of his experience getting pinned underneath a car after getting caught in the dust cloud of the North Tower. He gives an emotional account of learning that six of the men from his squad, Squad 41, were unaccounted for, and the sadness of only being able to bring three of their bodies home to their families. Ann talks about the secretive meeting that the Fire Department and high-ranking officials had with the families of missing firefighters to tell them that they were going from rescue to recovery mode at the site. At that point, Ann knew that her husband Bruce was in heaven, and they held a memorial service for him. Three things have helped Ann cope: her faith in God, the fact that Bruce was doing a job that he loved when he died and knew the risks of going into the towers, and the support of her family and friends.
