Located in West Milford, NJ near the NY state border. Legends of patrons being mauled by lions in their cars and rumors of animals escaping into the wilds of West Milford abound, as to the stories animals being left behind to fend for themselves and pray upon one another after the park closed in 1976. Some of these tales were true and many animal carcasses were left decomposing in the woods, simply abandoned for the buzzards to feast upon. Even decades after Jungle Habitat’s closure, many artifacts of the park still remained scattered throughout the forest. Exploring the overgrown ticket booths, reptile houses, animal pens, souvenir shops and the little zebra striped safari cars became a new kind of tourist attraction for many urbex sightseers. And eyewitness reports of non-indigenous species, like monkeys and kangaroos living wild and free in the remote corners of West Milford still persist to this day – perhaps descendants of escapees from Jungle Habitat that made their flight to freedom way back when.
