A stye, or hordeolum, is a painful, red bump that usually forms near the edge of the eyelid. It results from a bacterial infection, often involving Staphylococcus aureus, which inflames the oil glands at the base of the eyelashes or within the eyelid. Symptoms of a stye include swelling, tenderness, and sometimes discharge. Styes typically resolve on their own within a week, with warm compresses helping to speed up the healing process. In contrast, a chalazion is a painless, firm bump that develops due to the blockage of a meibomian gland, responsible for producing the oil layer of the tear film. This blockage causes the accumulation of oil and subsequent inflammation. Chalazia are generally larger and firmer than styes and are found further from the edge of the eyelid. While they often resolve without treatment over a few weeks to months, persistent chalazia may require medical intervention. Treatment for chalazia typically involves conservative measures like applying warm compresses and gently massaging the eyelid to promote drainage. If these measures fail, medical treatments such as Intense Pulsed Light (IPL), steroid injections or a minor surgical procedure called incision and curettage can be done to drain the chalazion. Preventing chalazia involves maintaining good eyelid hygiene and addressing underlying conditions that contribute to gland blockage. 👉 Check out MYZE for eyelid hygiene products!
