Celebrating 40 Years of Women Serving and Leading

Date: November 22, 2013 Speakers: Pauline Anderson, Susan Hammer, Christie Hammond, Kali Thorne Ladd, Kourtney Nelson, and Fran Storrs The 1970's saw groundbreaking advances in equal rights for women- in employment, education, credit, housing, public benefits, and civic participation. In 1973, after 3 failed attempts and a federal lawsuit, City Club members voted to amend the bylaws and admit women into membership. Four decades later, join us as we gather to celebrate women's achievements (both inside and outside the Club) and discuss the challenges that remain ahead. Susan Hammer, past Club president, will lead a stimulating conversation with Pauline Anderson, the Club's first woman president; Dr. Fran Storrs, past Club president; Christie Hammond, deputy commissioner of Oregon's Bureau of Labor and Industries; Kourtney Nelson, Club board member and past chair of its New Leaders Collective; and Kali Thorne Ladd, entrepreneur and new Club member. Pauline Anderson served as City Club's first woman president in 1982 and was one of its earliest woman members. Pauline is a local girl- born in the old Portland Women' s Hospital- since demolished- went to Washington High School- since closed- and worked for Multnomah County- always in danger of being subsumed by the city. She is married to Lloyd Anderson, also an fomer president of the City Club. Susan Hammer served as president of the City Club in 2006 and has been a member since 1978. She was formerly a partner at the Stoel Rives law firm. In 1998 she established Dispute Resolution Services where she continues to serve as a commercial and public policy mediator. She is a Distinguished Fellow in the International Academy of Mediators and she was named the Oregon Mediation "Lawyer of the Year" by Best Lawyers in 2012. Christie Hammond is the Deputy Commissioner of the Bureau of Labor and Industries, and has been with BOLI for 37 years. Prior to her current position, Ms. Hammond, a native Portlander, was the Administrator of the Wage and Hour Division for 16 years and also worked as a Wage and Hour Compliance Specialist, Compliance Manager, and Deputy Administrator of the Wage and Hour Division. Kali Thorne Ladd's background as an educator spans from teacher to program manager to policy maker over the last 14 years. After spending the last 4 years as Education Director for former Mayor Sam Adams, Kali pursued establishing and co-founding KairosPDX. In May 2013, Kali won election to the Portland Community College Board of Directors where she has served for the last year. Kali has also worked in education policy for State Superintendent Susan Castillo, as a SUN Site Manger at King Elementary School, and a consultant for the Portland Schools Foundation and the County Commission on Children and Families. Kourtney Nelson works for Iberdrola Renewables where she sells renewable energy on the wholesale market from Iberdrola's large portfolio of wind and solar facilities in the United States. Kourtney currently serves on the City Club Board of Governors and has been active with its New Leaders Collective since 2009, serving as chair for two years. She is a proud alumni of the University of Portland, where she earned her degree in Finance. Dr. Fran Storrs served as president of City Club in 1997 and has been a member since 1973. She now serves as Professor Emerita in OHSU's Department of Dermatology after a long and distinguished career in medicine. She has served on the board and executive committee of the American Academy of Dermatology and as past president of the Oregon Dermatology Society. She has also served in board leadership roles for a wide range of civic organizations including the ACLU of Oregon, Planned Parenthood, Outside In, and the Multnomah County Library.
