This video is about the history of Hiram Berdan's innovative design synonymous with accuracy. With the conclusion of the American Civil War new developments in weapons technology lead to the mid-19th century worldwide arms race. Whereas prior arms races were centered around the ever improving muzzleloading arms that other nations fielded, this was the first arms race centered around the use of a metallic cartridge, and arms capable of chambering Berdan's revolutionary self-contained case. Adopted by the Russian Empire in 1868, and used in the single-shot Berdan I, II, and Krnka Model 1869 rifles, the 10,75x58Rmm, or 42 Russian Berdan, was revolutionary, as it was the first military cartridge with the outside, centerfire, Berdan Primer and a bottleneck case.
