Webinar #26 - Nature-based solutions in Southend, UK & fighting air pollution with gardens

RECLAIM Network Plus Webinar #26 The twenty-sixth webinar of the 'Reclaiming Forgotten Cities - Turning Cities from Vulnerable Spaces to Healthy Places for People' took place on Wednesday, 5th July 2024. The webinar was chaired by RECLAIM co-investigator, Dr Thomas Kjeldsen from the University of Bath. This webinar included two speakers: Tom Palmer, Senior Engineer, Highways and Coastal, Neighbourhoods and Environment, Southend-on-Sea City Council and Dr Karina Corada-Perez, Air Quality & Green Infrastructure Research Fellow, Sustainability Research Institute, University of East London. Tom Palmer delivered a talk on "Integrating nature-based solutions across the City of Southend" and Dr Karina Corada-Perez on "Greening the urban landscape: The potential of domestic gardens for enhanced air quality and thermal comfort". After the talk a Q&A session was chaired by Dr Nerea Calvillo from the University of Warwick. Short bio of speakers: • Tom has over 15 years’ experience working in Local Authorities delivering a range of responsibilities around managing flood risk, ranging from enforcement, asset inspections and engagement to constructing award-winning flood alleviation schemes. As part of Catchment to Coast he is project managing the ‘Mid-Catchment sites’ – ones where rainwater and highway runoff are captured, treated, stored and re-used through innovative retrofit measures. This work has highlighted the importance of water as a valuable and unappreciated resource and inspired him to take a more holistic and multi-benefit approach to managing water going forward so we are better prepared in our changing climate. • Karina Corada-Pérez is an interdisciplinary environmental chemist, currently working as a Research Fellow specialising in Air Quality and Green Infrastructure at the Sustainability Research Institute at the University of East London. Karina is highly skilled in solving the intricate issues surrounding urban environmental challenges, focusing on promoting green justice by enhancing air quality. She obtained a master's in Planning and Environmental Management and recently finished her PhD studies at the Centre for Environmental Policy at Imperial College London.
