⚔️ The German Two-Handed Rapier Guard

So we have a little tradition over at ‪@bostonacademiedarmes‬ that the fifth class of a month we study something outside of the usual curriculum. This time we looked at a two-handed rapier guard presented in L’Ange and Pascha. Pacha calls this the “Guard of the Knee.” Neither master were huge fans of this guard. Both called it dangerous but included it anyways. Pascha says to save this for the salle or when you’re exhausted and L’Ange said to only use it if your sword arm is injured. But it’s weird for rapier, so perfect for doing something fun. To form this guard, you want to put your offhand on the forte, between your hilt and the middle of the sword. L’Ange says to also grip the sword at the pommel so you can reach further with a riposte. He positions the sword in a “low terza,” so the only openings are above the sword arm. Pascha holds his version a little more vertical so you can create invitations on the inside or outside line. Either way, you want a singular invitation, so you have a singular defensive action to worry about. Both masters were light on how to riposte, so you have some wiggle room for what to do. I approach this guard almost like it’s a bayonet-rifle but we messed around with a few potential ripostes. I’m sure some longsworders would enjoy messing with this guard around. It’s probably not gonna win you any tournaments or many fights, but fencing is fun and playing around with this stuff is great. Thanks to Yelena for letting me also get reps in! ---- DONATIONS: If you found this video useful or interesting, please consider a small donation so I can continue to produce rapier & other historical martial arts content. His life-long love of athletics and swashbuckling has led him down the road to practicing the art of historical fencing. He’s the founder of @bostonacademiedarmes , a hybrid in-person/online fencing school for HEMA & SCA historical fencers, with a focus on French and Italian rapier, smallsword, and dueling saber. He puts an emphasis on good body mechanics and helping his fencers to improve their physical fitness, athletic ability, and fencing skill while operating within their current physical limitations. As a competitor, Justin has won numerous rapier tournaments in the SCA -- both in singles and in group melee -- including Carolingia's Baronial Champion, East Kingdom Crown Champion, and named 7x to the Pennsic Champs team. He is 15th member of the East Kingdon’s Order of Defense, holds a Silver Broach and Maunche for his historical martial arts research, and a Silver Wheel and Silver Crescent for his coaching. Outside of the SCA and the Academie, Justin teaches rapier at Athena School of Arms, has taught workshops at events such as Lord Baltimore's Challenge and Iron Gate Exhibition (IGX), and is a certified personal trainer through NASM.
