Polymer nanoparticles are widely used to deliver drugs, predominantly anti-cancer drugs. In this presentation, Prof Martina Stenzel gives a brief overview on how nanoparticles can be used to deliver drugs before focusing specifically on self-assembled polymers. Thanks to modern polymer synthesis methods, a large variety of amphiphilic polymers can quickly be prepared and processed into nanoparticles. Loaded with drugs, these nanocarriers are often compared to Trojan Horses, deadly weapons that enter the cells and unload their toxic load. However detailed analysis of the polymer nanoparticle structure shows that the nanoparticles have cues that change their properties.
