Wines of this caliber are worth a special effort to find, purchase and consume. 90 - 95: An outstanding wine of exceptional complexity and character. In short, these are terrific wines. 80 - 89: A barely above average to very good wine displaying various degrees of finesse and flavor as well as character with no noticeable flaws. 70 - 79: An average wine with little distinction except that it is a soundly made. In essence, a straightforward, innocuous wine. 60 - 69: A below average wine containing noticeable deficiencies, such as excessive acidity and/or tannin, an absence of flavor or possibly dirty aromas or flavors. 50 - 59: A wine deemed to be unacceptable. Can you taste the difference between wines from discounters like Aldi and wines from specialist wine retailers? I am going to blind-taste 7 wines BLIND that are either from Aldi or from a Specialist retailer but they are in the same price bracket between 5 and 10 US$. There is fierce competition between discounters that focus on price and Specialist Retail that focus on service. Due to their size, price points, wine knowledge, and reputation wine quality has often been lacking amongst Discounters. It is challenging to get very good wine in very large quantities so there often was not enough of the good stuff to fill the shelves of thousands of shops. On top of that, it was for a long time a taboo for a highly regarded wine brand to sell its wines at Aldi. Your reputation would have been tarnished and you would have been delisted by shops and restaurants. This has changed in the last years as more and more well know wineries are working with discounters. Discounters are offering more “Expensive” wines and Famous brands that could only be purchased in high-end wine shops created second labels for the discount. On top of that discounters have started to invest in quality control and brought in wine expertise by Masters of Wine or Sommelier Consultants. So, I am guessing that this tasting will not be easy as the lines are blurred today. Nevertheless, I asked Leon to pick some wines at Aldi – one of the biggest wine discounters in the world – and a not-specified wine specialist. All wines are from the 5-10 Eur or US$ category in Germany.
