In this Chemistry video in Hindi for class 11 we explained, on the basis of molecular orbital theory, what the different types of molecular orbital are, what bond order is and how magnetic properties of molecules are predicted. Molecular orbital theory, based on quantum mechanics, was developed by Friedrich Hund, Robert Mulliken, John C. Slater, and John Lennard-Jones. When two atoms come close their atomic orbitals fuse to make molecular orbitals which envelopes both the nuclei of the closing atoms. This envelop binds those two nuclei. Bond order is defined as the half of the difference between the bonding electrons and the antibonding electrons. If all the molecular orbitals in a molecule are doubly occupied, the substance is diamagnetic (repelled by magnetic field), e.g., N2 molecule.
