Canon C300 vs Red Epic 8K Helium Sensor | Cinema Series

In our latest video on Georges Cameras TV, Nathan looks at a pair of cinematic heavyweights with the RED Epic with the Helium sensor and the Canon EOS C300 Mark III. The Canon EOS C300 Mark III is a Super35 cinema camera that's been widely applauded for years now. The Mark I version was launched almost a decade ago. Regardless, it is still a cinematic powerhouse that makes the most of its larger size to provide more than enough customisable buttons, controls, dials and ports for any project scale. One of the Canon EOS C300 III standout features is the large LCD monitor mounted to the support handle. The all-in-one solution prevents the need to mount separate external recording monitors or viewfinders to the camera body. The C300 Mark III shoots at an 800 native ISO and boasts no less than 16-stops of dynamic range thanks to the dual gain output. In terms of the magic resolution numbers, it shoots DCI 4K at 120p and 2K at up to 180p. It features in-body image stabilisation and built-in ND filters for greater exposure control for smooth, stable footage. Another killer feature is the 12-bit RAW internal recording capturing an amazing amount of data for post-processing play-time. We love the Canon EOS C300 Mark III for its performance and output, as well as being an all in one solution. Just add a lens of your choice, and you're ready to create cinematic footage. As for the RED Epic with Helium sensor, it's one of the most impressive cinema cameras available. However, you've got to add several accessories to this clean slate to make it outperform most other systems. RED cameras arrive in your hands as a black box - the viewfinder, side handle, monitor, and battery are all essential add-ons. Even the image sensor component is swappable or upgradable, depending on your needs. At the time of launch, the Helium 8K image sensor received the highest DXO score of all time. The sensor can record stunning 8K video at up to 75fps or 2K at up to 240fps. The RED Epic makes the most of the RED RAW Codec to always record at the highest quality allowing up to 16.5-stops of dynamic range. Unlike the Canon EOS C300 Mark III, the RED Epic Brain body is a little simpler with fewer interface and port options - but still enough to create compelling outcomes with ease. Having said that, the RED Epic offers unparalleled customisation options to allow visual creatives to build the camera they deserve. At the end of the day, the Canon EOS C300 Mark III and the RED Epic with the Helium 8K sensor represent two of the best cinematography cameras on the market. The Canon EOS C300 Mark III is the best tool for solo operators wanting a complete solution right out of the box. On the other hand, the RED Epic is essentially a computer in a highly customisable box and can be built out to capture big-budget cinematic experiences. Georges Cameras love supporting creative projects no matter your budget. Suppose you want to learn more about the Canon or RED cinematic camera experience, head in-store or online now.
