Sadhu Sundar Singh was a prominent Indian Christian missionary and mystic who lived during the early 20th century. Born into a Sikh family in the Punjab region of India in 1889, Singh was raised in a devout Sikh household, but he developed a spiritual hunger that his native religion could not satisfy. At the age of 15, he experienced a vision of Jesus Christ, which inspired him to leave behind his family, his religion, and his culture to follow the path of Christianity. Singh became a sadhu, a wandering ascetic who lived on alms and devoted himself entirely to spiritual pursuits. He traveled throughout India, preaching the message of Christianity and establishing a unique form of Indian Christianity that blended elements of the country's native religions with the teachings of Jesus Christ. Singh's approach to evangelism was notable for its ecumenicalism and its emphasis on personal conversion rather than institutional affiliation. Over the course of his ministry, Singh endured a great deal of persecution and violence, both from non-Christian opponents and from members of his own family who disowned him for abandoning Sikhism. He narrowly escaped assassination on several occasions and was imprisoned and tortured by Indian authorities. Despite the hardships he faced, Singh remained committed to his faith and continued to preach until his death in 1929, at the age of 39. His teachings and writings had a significant impact on the development of Christianity in India, and his legacy continues to inspire Christians and seekers of all faiths around the world.
