Supro amplifiers started out in the 1930s as the sound of Chicago blues, and later became prized for the scruffy and blistering guitar tones they unleashed for high-octane outfits such as the Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin. The Supro Delegate Custom and Ambassador Custom combo amps are descendants of the originators, and while they feature modern construction and premium components, they sound just as pugnacious and beautifully ragged as their ancestors. “The Delegate has a lot of character, and you can dial in a crazy array of tones,” says top Los Angeles session guitarist Mason Stoops. “The spring reverb reminds me of a kind of dirty Link Wray or Hank Marvin reverb that becomes an essential part of the guitar sound, rather than simply an effect. The Ambassador Custom lets you switch between a Class A and Class AB tube-output stage, with Class AB sounding very California-esque, and Class A providing all of the raunch and cool breakup of Chicago blues.” The Supro Delegate Custom packs 25 watts via three 12AX7 preamp tubes and two 6V6 output tubes. The 1x12 combo also features a Celestion G12M Greenback speaker, 3-band EQ and a tube-driven spring reverb. The Supro Ambassador Custom is a switchable 35-watt (Class A) or 50-watt (Class AB) 2x10 combo armed with one 12AT7 and three 12AX7 preamp tubes and two 5881/6L6WGC power tubes. Also in the mix are custom Supro BD10 speakers made by Celestion, a tube-driven spring reverb and 3-band EQ.
