INR stands for 'International Normalized Ratio'. The INR is calculated by dividing the patients Prothrombin Time (PT), measured in seconds, to the normal Prothrombin Time (PT). Then raising this ratio to the power of the ISI (International Sensitivity Index). As a formula it looks like this: INR = (PT patient/PT normal)ISI PT patient = patient's measured Prothrombin Time (in seconds) PT normal = laboratory value for normal patients (in seconds) ISI = International Sensitivity Index The patients INR should be between 2.0-3.0 if they are on Warfarin for treatment of Deep Venous Thrombosis, Pulmonary Embolism or Atrial Fibrillation for the duration of treatment, which can range anywhere from 3 months to lifetime. Patients with mechanical heart valves will require that their INR be in the range of 2.5-3.5.
