Neglected Teachings of Nisargadatta Maharaj

In “Nisargadatta: Neglected Teachings”, given online on March 13, 2021, spiritual teacher and Diamond Approach founder A. H. Almaas discussed six crucial aspects of Nisargadatta Maharaj’s teachings that often are not given the attention needed to fully understand his teachings. This was the first lecture in the 2021 A.H. Almaas Lecture Series offered by the Diamond Approach. One of the most potent pieces of spiritual literature of the last half-century is I Am That, by Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj (1897 – 1981). “In the immensity of consciousness, a light appears a tiny point that moves rapidly and traces shapes, thoughts and feelings, concepts and ideas, like the pen writing on paper. You are that tiny point, and by your movement, the world is ever re-created... Look within, and you will find that the point of light is the reflection of the immensity of light in the body, as the sense ‘I Am’." It's an inspiring description of our essential self. Yet, in contemporary spiritual circles, there’s no consensus around Nisargadatta’s instructions on how to realize it. Key insights ♦ Nisargadatta Maharaj challenges the idea of individuality, stating that consciousness is universal and can express itself in the form of an individual. ♦ Nisargadatta Maharaj's teaching goes beyond just beingness and emphasizes the importance of universal consciousness in realizing the absolute. ♦ Nisargadatta Maharaj's teaching on the I am is non-dual and universal, emphasizing the formless nature of everything. ♦ Nisargadatta Maharaj emphasizes the importance of recognizing the dimensionless point of consciousness in order to transcend being and realize pure awareness. ♦ The absolute is "unbelievably hard and solid" and beyond beingness and consciousness, consisting of the witness and the person becoming one. ♦ Nisargadatta Maharaj describes pure awareness as a "solid dense rock-like homogeneous and changeless mass" that is "immense" and "could be the whole universe." ♦ To realize the true self, one must eradicate all self-identification and understand that they are nothing perceivable or conceivable. ♦ The point of light is the reflection of the absolute in consciousness, representing all the qualities of the absolute in just a point. Summary The neglected teachings of Nisargadatta Maharaj emphasize recognizing oneself as universal consciousness and eradicating self-identification to reach a deeper realization of oneself, with a focus on connecting with the inner teacher and the importance of the point of light. • 00:00 ♦ Neglected teachings of Nisargadatta Maharaj: recognizing oneself as universal consciousness leads to true bliss, and the expression of universal consciousness in the form of an individual is often overlooked in non-dual teachings. • 06:27 ♦ Nisargadatta Maharaj's teachings emphasize transcending beingness, merging the feeling of "I am" with the mind, and recognizing the dimensionless point of consciousness to understand universal being and transcend duality. • 21:28 ♦ Nisargadatta Maharaj's neglected teachings emphasize the importance of awareness as a solid and immense mass beyond consciousness, and the need to eradicate self-identification to reach a deeper realization of oneself. • 38:07 ♦ Despite being a highly realized and powerful teacher, it is unclear if anyone truly understood the teachings of Nisargadatta Maharaj, with only one student being confirmed as having "got it," while others may have grasped something about non-duality but it is unknown if they fully understood the essence of his teachings. • 46:46 ♦ Nisargadatta Maharaj's teachings focused on his own realization and his book "I Am That" had a greater impact on spirituality in the west, with the speaker discussing their own experience of resting in the "I am" and advising to stay with the experience of being the source and try to understand what it's like to be beyond that, while also noting that Nisargadatta Maharaj did get frustrated and angry with a student who never understood his teachings. • 57:35 ♦ Nisargadatta Maharaj emphasized connecting with the inner teacher, beingness, for spiritual guidance, which evolves based on one's state of consciousness, and trusting experiences arising from consciousness rather than memory or mind, with connections to Jewish mysticism and Kabbalah. • 01:05:05 ♦ Nisargadatta Maharaj emphasized the importance of the point of light in his teachings, representing the reflection of the absolute in consciousness, and discussed the difficulty of understanding awareness and the nature of the absolute, while still living a normal human life. • 01:17:52 ♦ A blog will be created where people can ask questions, have discussions, and share different points of view about Nisargadatta Maharaj's teachings.
