The 1980s were dominated by Magic Johnson’s Los Angeles Lakers and Larry Bird’s Boston Celtics, they featured one of the greatest scorers of all time throughout the decade in Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, but there was another overlooked player who throughout the decade would score the more points than anyone else; and that player is Alex English. He flew under the radar playing for the South Carolina Gamecocks, as although he was more than capable, he never put up monster numbers. He would fall to the second round of the 1976 NBA Draft where he was selected by Milwaukee. He would spend two seasons coming off the bench for the Bucks, before spending a season and a half with the Indiana Pacers, as he got his first chance at being a starter. But in 1980, he was traded to the Denver Nuggets and over the next decade, he would be one of the league’s most lethal scorers, constantly finishing at the top of the scoring leaderboards, and pouring in points at a ridiculously efficient rate. He came to Denver as David Thompson’s career was beginning to unravel, He would team with Kiki Vandeweghe and Dan Issel during the first half of his time there, then pair with Fat Lever during his later years. Denver was never able to challenge for a championship, But English would turn them into a perennial playoff team and even a Western Conference Finals berth in 1985. He would end his career with the Dallas Mavericks, but he will always be remembered as a Denver Nugget, and one of the greatest scorers to ever touch a basketball, even if he was snubbed from both the NBA’s 50th anniversary team in 1996 and their 75th anniversary team in 2021. https://www.basketball-reference.com/...
