48- Johnny Lum Ho and Natasha Oda

Shared on Facebook: April 18, 2017. "We begin, with a long time favorite of Hilo..." Throwback Tuesday: In celebration of the Merrie Monarch Hula Festival being this week, I felt it was appropriate to share this powerful performance by the Miss Aloha Hula 2001 competition winner, Natasha Oda. Through our understanding of ʻike kūpuna, or ancestral knowledge, Oda demonstrates some of the physical and spiritual capabilities we Hawaiians inherently posses. Kumu Hula Pualani Kanakaʻole Kanahele refers to this privilege as "ancestral DNA," suggesting that we kānaka are able to channel our ancestors by partaking in practices that our kūpuna were well rooted in. For many Hula practitioners, this is where the concept of noho (spiritual possession/enlightenment) also comes into play. Regardless of what one may or may not believe in, it cannot be denied that when a Hawaiian who is spiritually strong performs a hula, there is no way that kind of performance can ever be duplicated. #KānakaDasWhy #ItsInTheKoko #AncestralDNA #AncestralKnowledge #NatashaOda #MissAlohaHula #MerrieMonarch #Hula #ʻIkeKūpuna #ʻIkeMatters #KeepTheConversationGoing Source Material: 1.
