Oak is a native tree in Ireland. It grows very well here and its branches and leaves are home to an enormous variety of life such as birds, insects, lichens and ferns. The acorns provide a food source to many animals, including, in the past, humans. And, of course, oak timber has always been valued, and continues to be valued, as a durable, workable and beautiful construction timber. Ever since humans came to Ireland, they have made use of the oak they found growing here naturally. This short video shows the traditional method, used before saws were invented, for cleaving oak posts from large logs. This technique makes use of longitudinal lines of separation in the timber caused by oak shake.
