On 9 November 1985 the Princess of Wales attended a dinner at the White House with her husband, Prince Charles. The dress she wore that night was designed by Victor Edelstein and was an off the shoulder, full-length, midnight-blue velvet gown, with a slightly v-shaped neckline and a zipper up the back. The cut was inspired by late Edwardian evening gowns, with ruching across the bodice and skirt, a slight bustle, a large bow below the waist and a mermaid bottom which flared out when the wearer twirled around. Late in the night, the First Lady, Nancy Reagan, arranged to have one of the celebrity guests, actor John Travolta, dance with Diana. It caused a sensation when pictures of them together hit the newspapers and as a result, the dress has become known as the Travolta dress and is one of the Princess’s most famous looks. Diana wore it several more times, before selling it to raise money for charity in 1997.
