Full Route Visual | Arriva Leicester 29 - Leicester to Burton | 4772 (YJ56 KFD)

Here's the big one guys. I bring you the 29. This is Arriva's longest route in Leicester (because it goes out of Leicestershire into Derbyshire and Staffordshire, however, the Leicester-Derby ZonePlus Saver is still valid). The 29 runs from St. Margaret's Bus Station in Leicester all the way to the Octagon Centre in Burton via Frog Island, Groby Road, Glenfield Hospital, Glenfield North (County Hall), Groby, Bradgate Hill, Field Head, Markfield, M1 Junction 22, Bardon Hill, Greenhill, Whitwick, New Swannington, Stephenson College, Coalville, Swannington, Coleorton, Church Town, A42 Junction 13, Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Shellbrook, Norris Hill, Blackfordby, Woodville, Swadlincote, Newhall, Stapenhill, St. Peter's Bridge and Lichfield Street. This was quite an adventure. Thank you Arriva (at Thurmaston) for trying to get more double-deckers on this adventurous route (Wigston still need to sort their shit out). This route has been through a lot of changes. Until August 2006, it was the 117 and 118 going to Swadlincote based at Coalville. From then until July 2009, the section this route did between Leicester and Coalville was the 28A and 28B while express service X2 went to Burton, but was quicker as it bypassed Groby, Markfield and Whitwick (like the Skylink that Loughborough now has). In July 2009, they were renumbered 29 and 29A and the X2 was scrapped. Instead, they changed to the 9 and 9A to go to Burton. In March 2011, Coalville depot closed so operation transferred to Burton. The interworking system got more complicated in April 2015 as the 29 was replaced with a 29X which bypassed Bardon Hill and Whitwick but wasn’t as frequent as the 29A. In August 2016, Arriva sold their Burton depot to Midland Classic So operation transferred to Thurmaston. The route was revised again in February 2017, this time running all the way to Burton as the 29 and 29A with one 29 an hour just going to Coalville and interworking with the 26, and double-deckers introduced for those journeys serving the Amazon Warehouse. In November 2018, the 29A was cut back to Swadlincote, and more double-deckers were introduced throughout the day. As a result, there is no more interworking with the 26 due to a just 13ft. bridge between Thornton and Bagworth. The service starts running at a 10 minute frequency up Groby Road (combined with the 26, 27 and 29A) before it splits to 20 minutes between Groby and Coalville (just combined with the 29A). Some 29 journeys only go as far as Coalville so if you live between Coalville and Swadlincote and it's served by both routes, you get a 20 or 40 minute frequency depending on the time of day. The same applies in Ratby or in the south of Groby if you're just served by the 27. The two routes only split after Coalville so if you're just served by the 29 or 29A, it's an hourly frequency. The 29A was recently cut back to Swadlincote so after that, it's just an hourly frequency. Since the service was introduced in its current form, SB200s have been the norm with Optare Versas and even the occasional Solo covering. Due to numerous complaints about overcrowding recently, Arriva are introducing more double-decker journeys for it. They are my favourite buses (which will probably all start leaving next year), the VDL DB250s. Interestingly, on the way back, I heard a woman who got on in Groby say to her friends, "Haven't been upstairs on the bus for years" as since Arriva replaced Midland Fox in 1997, it's only ever been single-deckers this way. I still prefer the X84 for some reason even though that now uses Solos as the norm, but this route makes a very close 2nd. My favourite route that stays in Leicestershire is still the 127. Anyway, enough waffling on. Here are the songs that I used: 1: As it's almost Christmas, I thought I'd start with a severely underrated Christmas song. It's "Share This Day" by Josh Kelley. It has only ever been used in 2004 in the credits for one of my favourite childhood Christmas movies, never released on iTunes or Spotify. 2: Cloud 41 - Ride Away (feat. Unfortunately, they've deleted it and now I can't find it.
