Su cuenca tiene una superficie de casi 989 000 km², de los cuales el 65 % quedan en territorio venezolano y el 35 % restante en territorio colombiano. El rio Orinoco además de ser el mayor río de Venezuela, es fuente de grandes riquezas minerales, ecológicas, naturales, hídricas y dueño mucha historia.
