If you have any further questions or want to see other examples of the mic in action then just let me know and i'll add it to a follow up video in the near future. -------------------------------- _SCRIPT_ Hi I'm Adam Roxby and in this video I'm going to be reviewing the brand new Rode iXY. Professional quality stereo microphone for lightning comparable iDevises. So the new iXY is the updated version of the popular broadcast quality mobile microphone from Australian manufacture RODE. I was privileged enough to be part of the beta testing program for this mic so have come to know it rather well. For theses who have used the previous version there will be some stark differences so we're going to have a look at it and then show you some of the features that make this microphone stand out from the rest. Just to let you know, all the audio in this video is being recorded using the iXY. The first thing to say is that there is a grey improvement on the case. Previously the hard carry case with the carabiner clip was only big enough for the microphone which was a bit annoying as you would just have the spoffle loose in your bag. Considering you would almost always need to use a spoffle it's great to have it with you at all times. So looking at it, the style is really distinctive and sleek and they have overcome the potential issues of attaching the mic by clamping it over the home button. The mic also has green lights on it to let you know you have attached it properly. One thing that could have been better would to have used these lights to give some visual indication if your clipping or if your recording sound thats too loud, but that's only a minor point. Before we actually look at some of the settings a hear more from the mic a quick word on compatibility. Obviously the mic works with all apps on your iDevice but on app I do use for example has no ability to set the gain which can make the mic sound a bit quite. So that leads nicely on the app of choice which is the RODE Rec app. This app unlocks the full professional capabilities of this microphone and give you access to record up to 96000 Hz. Another cool feature of the app is that you can choose between the default stereo or mono, either using the left or the right channel or both. This is useful if you are conducing an interview and don't want to distract your audience with voices floating around the left and right channel. Here is an example of an interview I made using the mic using mono at 48000 Hz. As for music, I don't a have a pure example but here is a mix using a recorder capturing the instrument from the sound desk and the iXY capturing some of the audience, vocals and other sounds. There are many more options in the RODE Rec app which has a lite and a full featured paid version. Features such as the ability to do rough editing on the go and the ability to listen to what the microphone is hearing with your headphones so you know that you are getting exactly what you need to record. Many of the features I haven't used as I just don' need to but it's nice to know they are investing the time and effort into an app that can really go beyond the basics. Finally, if your planning to do field recording or recordings in more inhospitable locations then the default spoffle isn't going to cut it and your going to want to get a more heavy duty wind noise canceller. I personally use the RODE Dead Kitten. It's very effective and fits over the mic and the spoffle very well. As a side note, it also fits over the end of your phone if your ever in a situation where you need to record without using the iXY. So in conclusion, this is fantastic update to a brilliant microphone and secures RODE's place as the go to option for theses wanting to record high quality audio on the go. It's small, sleek form and hard carry case means that you never need to be without it and ready to record audio for whatever the purpose. This mic comes with complete and unreserved recommendation.
