Our spotlight today is on the FV4005, the final tank of the 1940s, where the mantra was 'bigger gun is better.' But why was it built? It was a direct response to the Soviet IS-3. The FV4005, armed with a massive 183mm cannon, started development in the late 1940s. The journey included two stages: a prototype and a stage 2 version with a fully enclosed turret. But challenges emerged with recoil, limited gun movement, and a slow reload speed. Despite this, the British Army seemed content. In 1951, two stage 2 FV4005 tanks were completed. However, they faced issues like susceptibility to crosswinds and reduced accuracy. Fast forward to 2023, and exciting news!
