Lee Herrick - Poetry.LA Interview

LEE HERRICK is California’s 10th Poet Laureate and first Asian American to serve in the role. He has authored the collections: “Scar and Flower,” (Word Poetry Books, 2018) finalist for the 2020 Northern California Book Award; “Gardening Secrets of the Dead” (2012) and “This Many Miles from Desire” (2007), both from WordTech editions. He is co-editor of “The World I Leave You: Asian American Poets on Faith and Spirit” (Orison Books, 2020). His poems can be found at the The Poetry Foundation and Academy of American Poets sites and in the anthologies “The Place That Inhabits Us: Poems from the San Francisco Bay Watershed"; "Indivisible: Poems of Social Justice”; “HERE: Poems for the Planet"; and “Dear America: Letters of Hope, Habitat, Defiance, and Democracy.” He is on the advisory board of Terrain.org and Sixteen Rivers Press and co-founded LitHop in Fresno. Born in Daejeon, Korea, and adopted as an infant, he lives with his family in Fresno and served as that city’s 2015-2017 poet laureate. He teaches at Fresno City College and in the low-residency MFA program of Univ. of Nevada Reno at Lake Tahoe. Host LYNNE THOMPSON, was the 2021-22 Los Angeles Poet Laureate. The daughter of Caribbean immigrants, her poetry collections include “Fretwork” (Marsh Hawk Press, 2019), winner of the Marsh Hawk Press Poetry Prize; “Start with A Small Guitar” (What Books Press, 2013); and “Beg No Pardon” (Perugia Press, 2007), winner of the Perugia Press Prize and the Great Lakes Colleges Association’s New Writers Award.
