OUR TRIP TO DAVAO CITY | CHEAPEST STREET FOOD IN DAVAO, PHILIPPINES | ISLAND LIFE

Today we are going to Davao City for my husband's annual report at the immigration office. All registered foreigners here have to report within the first 60 days of the year to avoid being fined. We're lucky that we live not too far from Davao City, so it's easier for us to commute. I am especially excited today because we will be going to the famous night market and spending the night in the city. It was already lunch time when we arrived at the office, but the officers still accommodated us. I am very hands-on when it comes to my husband's visa. I want to make sure everything is in order. We go to the Bureau of Investigation to ask about the renewal of Boris' clearance. He needs a clearance to apply for a permanent visa. It's too early to check into our hotel, so we decided to go to the nearby mall to pass the time. There's not much to see here, so we go to the most famous park here in Davao City, The People's Park. As soon as you enter The People's Park, you will immediately notice the sculptures installed in different places. Most of the statues represent the Lumad people. Lumad is a term that refers to the different groups of indigenous people in Davao. They make a good symbolism of unity in diversity and a good impression to the visitors how rich in culture the Davao region has. This big sculpture of the Philippine eagle is also hard to miss. It looks so realistic. People enjoy the gloomy weather. Some are studying, taking pictures and these guys are taking turns doing handstands. We didn't stay long, but we are still glad that we got to visit this famous place in the city. As the full moon shines above, a wonderful smell fills the air. Security is tight around the night market. There are guards, police and even the army. Big bags and hoodies are not allowed inside. Vendors are preparing their stalls and people are starting to come in. This is our first time at the Roxas night market and we accidentally wandered to the end of the line. In this part of the market there are a lot of stalls selling used clothes. We just browsed a bit and then went to the food section because that's what we came here for. After scanning the entire food section, we chose this barbecue stall. Besides meat skewers, there are also different kinds of fish and sausages. The staff then takes the things we chose and grills them at the back of the stalls. The lights here are powered by these big batteries, just like in the old days. After a few minutes our food is ready. Boris only took some skewers of pork, chicken intestines and chicken livers, we also got this seaweed salad for free. We didn't order rice because we didn't want to fill up too fast, there are so many dishes to try. After the barbecue, this stall caught our attention. Different fruits on skewers covered with caramelized sugar. There are also stalls selling common street food like siomai, dynamite, shrimp lumpia, kwek-kwek and buchi with different fillings. We try the egg bun and lobster ball, which they deep fry fresh right here. After the food stalls, there are many massage therapists in this part of the night market. A massage costs 150 pesos for both legs and 350 pesos for a full body massage. We will just try the leg massage this time. There are also masseuses if you feel more comfortable with women. I took Tata's daughter to the food market and bought her juice and candied fruit. He told me that his daughter always comes to work with him. We went back to the hotel with full bellies and relaxed minds and bodies. The day went better than expected.
