Qiu He, 12, lives in school for most of the week and on his grandparents’ farm on weekends, in Ninglang Yi Autonomous County in northwest Yunnan. He sees his mother, who works in the city, only once or twice a year. In this isolated mountainous area, the limited crops that can be farmed such as buckwheat and potatoes don’t sell for much - the average annual household income in 2008 reportedly ranged between 1,000 and 2,000 renminbi (US$157-315). The locals believe that education is their way out of rural poverty and to economic opportunities elsewhere.
