Twenty-year-old Jamngaihkim Gangte’s life has altered over the past four weeks. A college student in Imphal, her mother, a government servant, and her brother were murdered during the violence in the state. Jamngaihkim witnessed their deaths, she said. She then fled to Delhi, where she spoke to Newslaundry’s Shivnarayan Rajpurohit about what she went through from the evening of May 3. Over the course of 24 hours, she said, she and her family were chased by vindictive mobs, grilled for their ethnic identity, and compelled to lock themselves in a building’s terrace room for five hours before squeezing into a car’s boot to safety. By the end of this ordeal, they would witness unparalleled loss with the killing of Jamngaihkim’s mother and brother. “They did not spare any of us,” she said. “They hit us any way they could.” Watch.
