Our Hesperian Way! - CHS Instrumental Music Spring Concert 2024

Recorded on May 9th, 2024 at Case High School PROGRAM CAN BE FOUND ON OUR WEBSITE https://sites.google.com/rusd.org/chs... “Today...the arts are everywhere, booming and blooming. There are Arts Councils, grants flow in all directions; and there is, of course, this very meeting here today. But, I am sad to say, we are still an uncultured nation, and no amount of granting or funding is ever going to change that unless we become not only an art-producing people, but a people prepared to receive the aesthetic product, and that means an educated people. Only a society prepared by education can ever be truly a cultured society. “Children must receive musical instruction as naturally as food, and with as much pleasure as they derive from a ball game. And this must happen from the beginning of their school lives. Only then will we produce a generation of Americans prepared to receive the larger musical experience, and to have the passion to probe ever more deeply. Then we will have our true musical public: an alive, receptive, truly critical public which will demand the best that our artists can supply.” -Leonard Bernstein Testimony (excerpts) presented before the House Subcommittee on Select Education, 1977 ### If anybody needs proof of the benefits of music education, nobody has to look any further than the Class of 2024. When these student musicians came to Case, the world was locked down and many students did not physically come to Case until their sophomore year. I remember one student here this evening telling me about “last year in eighth grade” on the first day of their sophomore year. This is a group that, through their achievements in music, have found ways out of the darkness of a pandemic. They have found ways to receive the larger musical experience, and to have the passion to probe ever more deeply. They are an alive, receptive, truly critical group of musicians and, more importantly, people. Their four years at Case have helped shape this school since 2020 and it has been the highest honor to work with each and every one of them. This Performing Arts Department and the entire school would not be where it is today without them. -Max Feiler ### History of Our Hesperian Way From Spring 2019 to Spring 2021, we named our spring concerts This Is Our Way. This title originates from Woody Herman’s quote, “It is no longer a luxury to have a very good, comprehensive musical education. It is a must! Young people today have so much to say that is valid, that it is up to us to help and encourage them to find a way. This is our way!” In Spring 2022, the title changed to Our Hesperian Way, representing both the complete transition from the previous director as well as a change in our culture as a performance group. The term Hesperian comes from the title of Case High School’s yearbook. The term comes from the Greek term Hesperia, or ‘land of the west.’ Case High School is historically the furthest west high school in Racine Unified. Although technically REAL School is now to the west of us, we can still claim this title as the furthest west Academy of Racine.
