Sheringham Walk: Town Centre & Beach【4K】

Located on the east coast of England, in the county of Norfolk, and around 25 miles north of Norwich, is the town of Sheringham. The first recorded reference to the town comes from the Domesday Book of 1086, where it is recorded as 'Silingeham'. Its name is derived from Old English for 'homestead of Scira's people', where Scira was a Saxon leader. For centuries, Sheringham was a small fishing village. This began to change with the arrival of the railway in 1887. Visitors from Norwich and further afield were able to make day trips, and subsequently Sheringham's population quadrupled from just over 1,000 in 1881 to nearly 5,000 in 1921. Sheringham's fishing industry hit a peak around the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The railways aided in this regard as crabs and lobsters were transported by train to London's fish markets. At its peak, around 200 fishing boats were active in the town, though this has since dwindled to a single-figure amount. In 1967 the original railway station at Sheringham closed on the same day as the opening of a new station courtesy of British Rail, situated right next to it. In 1975 the original reopened as a heritage railway station. This is featured in the walk, and functions today as the eastern terminus of the North Norfolk Railway, linking to the inland town of Holt to the west. To its immediate east, the current National Rail Sheringham station is the northern terminus of the Bittern Line, linking up to Norwich. The line is named after a rare bird found in the reedy wetlands of Norfolk. Trains to and from Norwich typically take just under an hour. Just to the east of Sheringham is the neighbouring village of West Runton. It was here that the fossilised skeleton of a mammoth was discovered in 1990. The mammoth in question is believed to be around 700,000 years old, and the find is the largest nearly complete mammoth skeleton to have been uncovered. This formed the inspiration for the mural by artist David Barber seen around the 17-minute mark, which was unveiled in 2016. 👇 SUBSCRIBE TO 4K EXPLORER FOR NEW VIDEOS EVERY WEEK 👇 https://www.youtube.com/4KExplorer?su...
