Robeson was a Renaissance man who was not only an accomplished singer, actor, and athlete but also a passionate advocate for civil rights and social justice. Born in Princeton, New Jersey, in 1898, Robeson grew up in a family of educators and activists. He went on to become one of the most famous and influential performers of his time, known for his powerful baritone voice and his unforgettable performances of "Ol' Man River" and other classic songs. Throughout his career, Robeson used his platform to speak out against racial injustice and to promote the cause of equality and freedom. He was an early supporter of the Civil Rights Movement and a vocal critic of colonialism, apartheid, and other forms of oppression. Despite facing fierce opposition and blacklisting from the government during the Red Scare of the 1950s, Robeson remained steadfast in his beliefs and continued to tour and perform worldwide. He remains an inspiration to activists and artists alike, and his contributions to the arts and social justice continue to be celebrated and remembered.
