Transcribed for Wind Ensemble by Mike Lebrias I. Prophecy 0:19 II. Profanation 7:12 III. Lamentation 14:04 featuring Claudia Chapa, mezzo-soprano performed by the University of Texas Wind Ensemble on October 8th, 2023 -------------------------------------------------------------------- This is quite possibly the biggest musical undertaking i've ever done. The second movement of this symphony has been a staple of the wind band repertoire ever since Mr. Bencriscutto introduced it in the early 50's. In my opinion, the first and third movements work just as well for winds - especially with the ongoing trend of pieces being written for vocal solo and wind ensemble accompaniment. I spent most of my time trying to decide which instrumental colors fit best throughout the symphony, as Mr. Bernstein has mentioned: "As for programmatic meanings, the intention is again not one of literalness, but of emotional quality..." I wanted to pick instrumental combinations that fit the modern wind ensemble, and met the emotional qualities I had interpreted throughout my study of the work. Overall, I'm happy with how the transcription turned out - the rehearsal process was definitely stressful, but it challenged me in ways that I had never been before - so it was a growing and learning experience for sure. ✌️
