Liver tumor radioembolization, also known as transarterial radioembolization (TARE) or selective internal radiation therapy (SIRT), is a minimally invasive treatment for liver cancer. It's particularly used in cases of primary liver cancer (like hepatocellular carcinoma) or metastatic liver cancer (cancer that has spread to the liver from other areas). The procedure involves delivering tiny radioactive beads (microspheres) directly to the liver tumors via the hepatic artery, the main blood vessel that supplies blood to the liver. These microspheres contain a radioactive isotope, commonly Yttrium-90 (Y90), which emits radiation to target and destroy cancer cells. The process starts with a catheter inserted into the hepatic artery through a small incision, usually in the groin. The microspheres are then injected and carried by the bloodstream directly to the liver tumor, where they lodge in the tumor's blood vessels. This allows for high doses of radiation to be delivered directly to the tumor while sparing most of the healthy liver tissue. Radioembolization is beneficial for patients who may not be candidates for traditional surgery or other treatments due to the size, location, or number of tumors, or due to underlying liver conditions. It's known for its targeted approach, minimizing systemic side effects typically seen in traditional chemotherapy. The procedure is usually well-tolerated, and patients often return home the same or next day.
