One of my favorite things to do is crossing Lake Michigan aboard the steam car ferry BADGER. I made my first trip aboard the BADGER on Labor Day weekend 1994. I found it a great way to get west into Wisconsin. Years later I drove around Chicago and after experiencing that nightmare just once I swore to never do it again. Avoiding the trip through Chicago was exactly why the railroads, 100 years earlier, had decided to use car ferries to cut the corner and more efficiently deal with Lake Michigan. These vessels were monsters in their time and challenged the lake in all weather. Their development is thumb-nailed in this video. Of course if I did the entire history the show would run several hours- so this is simply a quick history. Yes- there were shipwrecks, but that's something to be illustrated in later videos.
