How To Start Homeschooling: Made To Walk

There are two different kinds of homeschool families. The ones who have been planning for this their whole lives. Maybe they were homeschooled or they always knew that the day they had kids they would be homeschooled. Some families did not plan to be homeschooled. Due to unforeseen circumstances, they are now homeschooling. It could be because their child has a learning disability and the school system is not providing necessary accommodations. Families across the nation are choosing homeschooling due to religious and political alignment to values not represented in today's public school system. There are also times that due to behavioral or social issues families are in a position that requires them to keep kids home. One more example would be during COVID-19, some families chose not to go back to traditional schooling. --- So what happens when you decide to pull the plug? Lucky for you I decided to pull the plug halfway through the first semester of a school year. I learned the dos and don't so hopefully you don't have to learn the hard way. Don't make a plan. I know that goes against everything that makes sense. When you plan out structure, lectures and timelines you might find yourself frustrated that things aren't going the way you planned. I began to try to manage homeschooling with a traditional school structure. My kid hated it and I hated being the bad guy. I had things that needed to get done and school wasn't getting accomplished. After some trial and error, I realized that my kiddo was very comfortable and focused on doing work from 4 pm-6 pm. Who am I to say night school doesn't work? It works for college kids so why not. I also found that once we got on a rhythm it was hard to shift. I did not have to do every subject every day. We decided to spend several hours on one topic a day instead of trying to cram all the subjects into each day. Let your plan find you instead of forcing things into your plan. Curriculum is just curriculum. It is not a hill that you die on. You may find one subject in one style and another subject you're not in love with under the same curriculum. Mix and match if it makes sense. Here are some helpful questions to ask yourself before shopping: What are your child’s interests? What does he/she enjoy using (pencil, tablet, computer)? Does your child learn visually, audibly, hands-on etc.? Defining success comes through learning your kiddo first. Watch how they engage with their books and toys. Listen during nonstructured time, this will tell you tons about how your kid enjoys learning. If you pick a path that he/she is miserable going down then you will both be miserable. Co-ops are an extension of group learning. These can be very helpful for some and extremely frustrating for others. Ask questions about what they might be learning, and ask if there will be homework or projects. These things could be a deal breaker for you. Watch for social cues. There are times we use co-ops as a means to socialize however if the social environment is not cultivating the behaviors you want you'll be right back to traditional school issues. These can create a break for some and a new headache for others. How much work should we be doing? There are no legal guidelines for homeschooling. If you get wrapped up in being behind schools you might miss a chance to focus on learning something they may not learn in school. For example, if there is a time in history that interests your kids or a science subcategory they want to really dive into with homeschooling you have the freedom to do that. The four subjects that matter most are Math, Science, Language Arts, and History. Look into electives that your child has an interest in. Use electives as an extension of learning. I was talking to my son about probability and he was not interested in the least. So we went to the basketball court and we started talking about probability using free throws and all of a sudden it was very interesting to him. What if a child needs IEP services? There are still services available to you for your IEP. You still pay taxes and therefore have access to this through your local school district. You can also use in-home services through private companies. Insurance covers a good portion of this. You can have ABA, OT, Speech and others help you in the homeschool process. I have had great success having in-home services that gave me lessons on best practices at home. My son also very much enjoyed having someone else come and guide him through homeschooling. Some non-profits can guide you through resourceful tools you have access to and provide information on qualifying for Medicaid, SSI, scholarships or Grants. Schools put schools first. Teachers put requirements first. School Boards put PR first. Parents put their kids first. YOU ARE THE BEST TEACHER FOR YOU KID. Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it. Prov 22:6
