TBPPM Friday Forum 24-4 | How can we best equip, engage and empower nurses to End TB?

Ahead of International Day of Nurses (May 12th) we highlight TB nurses – The theme for this year is “The economic power of care”, which creates healthy people and societies and drives healthy economies, will be highlighted by ICN on International Nurses' Day 2024 under the theme: Our Nurses. Our Future. The economic power of care. Nurses are key in TB prevention, diagnosis, treatment initiation, treatment monitoring, and evaluation and documentation of TB treatment outcomes. Nurses are also the ones closest to people affected by TB, often not just involved in supporting their TB care, but in many of the social determinants affecting people’s health condition. While being the force of care for people affected by TB, nurses face numerous challenges. In many countries of the world, we see poor working conditions that compromise their occupational safety and mental health, lack of support mechanisms and fair pay, and more often than not are nurses left out of design and planning of TB policies and interventions. History shows that societal impacts heavily influence the role of those at the frontlines of care. The book “Black Angels” describing the life of nurses in a TB sanatorium in NYC several decades ago, resonates with some of today’s nurses' experiences. When we talk about the fundamental pillar of people-centered TB care, it is obvious that the supportive frontline nurses and their overall role and place in TB programs needs to be strengthened. This discussion will focus on the role of nurses in TB care (including those in the private sector). When we talk about the fundamental pillar of people-centered TB care, it is obvious that the supportive frontline nurses and their overall role and place in TB programs needs to be strengthened. This discussion will focus on the role of nurses in TB care (including those in the private sector). Some of the key questions to guide the discussion: 1. As a TB nurse, what makes you the most passionate about the role of nurses in tuberculosis care? 2. How can we best equip, engage, protect and empower nurses in the efforts to End TB? 3. What worries do you have about the role of nurses? What barriers do you face as a nurse? 4. How are nurses supported, and what can be done better, given the complexity of caring for people with TB? 5. Tell me one thing you are going to do after this Forum to improve the role of nurses in TB care (and what would you like others to do?) ------------- Be a part of the TBPPM Learning Network: https://www.tbppm.org/ Follow us on Twitter:   / tb_ppm
