Pointing and Calling – A simple way to reduce automation bias

In this segment from the May edition of The Automation Village (   • Learn about Data Validation at The Au...  ), we discuss Pointing and Calling (or shisa kanko), a method of occupational safety first developed for the Japanese Railway system in the 1900’s. This combination of pointing at important indicators and calling out their status has been found to significantly reduce operator errors by reducing automation bias. Errors of Automation Bias typically arise when a machine is the primarily decision maker and a person is there as an observer and a failsafe.
