Sticky Wicket 'Brushes and Sticks' Drum Solo 1930's Style

For this third video at The Northup Drum Museum I was inspired to start playing with brushes as these calf heads have such a wonderful response to brush work and this snare drum is a beauty. It's a Conn Tuxedo Deluxe model which is very much like a Leedy Black Elite, which is no surprise perhaps as the instrument manufacturers C.G. Conn Ltd took over The Leedy Drum Company after the Wall Street financial crash of 1929. This particular kit with it's beautiful and rare Butterfly Girl Silhouette factory bass drum head used to belong to Jim Messina, host of The Vintage Drums Talk radio show. Tim and I were lucky enough to be guests on his show during my visit. (See links below) As I was recording this drum video I got into a kind of 1930's sticks and brushes style which was perhaps inspired a little bit by drummer Oliver Tines who was a member of Louis Armstrong's 'Harlem Hot Rhythm Outfit' in the early 30's. In fact his wonderful brush work on that band's 1933 version of "Dinah" had already encouraged me in 2019 to record a tribute to his performance on one of my Next Level Chops videos (See link below) And so with this gorgeous Conn/Leedy Traps set perhaps a little bit of Oliver Tines's style came right out of my sticks and brushes again, ha! Anyway, I hope you enjoyed it & please remember to like and subscribe! Many thanks Sticks Further video links. 1.
