Abandoned AT&T Microwave Tower

This is the old BELL SYSTEM/AT&T long distance radio relay tower in Richfield, Ohio. This tower was built around the late 40s or early 1950s (judging by the microwave antenna array) and was built to withstand a nuclear blast up to several megatons and fallout if Akron and Cleveland were ever attacked. There is another one in nearby Twinsburg; it is one of the later ones (all-steel frame with Western Electric KS-15676 horn antennas) c. 1952. This one is a concrete silo type (c. late 1940s). There is a lot of old electrical hardware, such as old style fuse panels, and disconnect switches. (made by FRANK ADAM, TRUMBULL ELECTRIC, GE, and BULLDOG/I. T. E.) There are also lots of BELL SYSTEM/W. E. relays in their enclosures (made by WHEELOCK SIGNALS INC) and remnants of switching equipment along with other complicated electronics. One piece of equipment is from the late BELL SYSTEM era, before the breakup of the company. I’ll return at a later date to show the antenna array and the roof.
