There was a sense of liberation, you know, a way I could do whatever I like. But coming to Adelaide then, I was free but at the same time I thought I was second-rate, that I would never amount to anything. That was the first time I really realised that I was Black. In Malaysia, it was cosmopolitan. So, you know, I developed this thing about an inferiority complex about being Black in a white man's society. And sometimes this was brought to my attention by, uh, some people I would meet, shake their hands and then if you noticed them, they'd wipe their hands because they think you dirtied their hand or something like that.
