It can be ranging from an entire scene all the way down to views of the interior of an animal or a plant, dissecting it down especially for scientific purposes. So a lot of natural science illustration ends up going into text books or for teaching purposes. The majority of the people are already doing something for work, but they're thinking about changing their career or augmenting their career. We have a lot of students that are in a least the biological or science fields and so it might be a dual future for them where they do some illustrating work and some biology work too. And then we have people that come into the program that are purely artistic but they have the interest in the natural world and want to try and combine the two. We covered sketching earlier in the quarter and now we're focused on water color painting and acrylic painting. And we're going to use the Elmo projector, which projects what I'm doing on the wall. We started this same painting last week, so some of them might bring that in to work along with me. Others might be bringing in something that they want to work on their own, that way they can get some feedback from me and some of the other students during class. They work on a variety of other mediums; in pencil, in carbon dust, pen and ink. But definitely they're getting a good sampling of different media that are used in this field. Today, we're actually going to talk about wildlife photography. How important it is for students to gather their own references with photography and sketching, rather than going from published photographs. We do teach a lot about art technique, but then we also teach scientific accuracy, which is a huge part of this whole program. I focus on birds and mammals and we do cover anatomy. I try to focus on the things that I feel are most important for an illustrator or an artist to know. Mistakes that I've seen other artists do in the past, that can be easily avoided by just learning the anatomy. Students learn a lot, they also have a lot of comradely with each other. They go through the program together, from start to finish. Many of the classes stick together after the program is over, and will plan exhibits together and help each other out in the long run. A lot of art schools focus on the art but not really what are you going to do after you graduate, how are you going to make a living at this? But in the last quarter, I teach a class that is really completely focused on the business side of being an illustrator. I would say that most people that are doing this are doing it on a freelance basis. That's what I do, and have done for the last 20 years is freelance illustration and art work. And I know that having kept in touch with some of the students that I've had in the past, most of them have gone on to do some kind of freelance work afterwards. Many of them have had some definite successes in getting into shows and having sales and starting their careers. It's been fun to keep in touch with students and see where they go afterwards.
