Crews Fight Fire with Fire - Brush Trucks & Tankers Rush to Contain Massive Field Fire

BEAVER TOWNSHIP, PA – At 3 PM, crews from Springboro Volunteer Fire Department and Conneautville (Fellows' Club Fire & EMS) were dispatched to a reported field fire involving Miscanthus Grass on Joiner Road in Beaver Township in Crawford County near the Ohio line. When Springboro arrived on scene, Chief Shauberger of Springboro immediately requested more brush units from Springfield Vol. Fire Dept., Cranesville Volunteer Fire Department, and a tanker from Monroe Township Volunteer Fire Department (Ohio). Linesville Volunteer Fire Department was also dispatched shortly after. Crews initially walked the perimeter of the fire with Indian packs to prevent the fire from spreading into wooded areas. For one section of field, the fire was spreading quickly to another wood line. Crews prepped for a backburn by applying water to the perimeter of a section of tall grass. Once the Springfield and Cranesville brush trucks arrived, members of the Crawford Erie County Wildland Fire Crew (CEC) performed a backburn which prevented an advancing fire line from spreading into the woods. The fire that firefighters intentionally set burned back towards the main fire which prevented the forward advancement of the fire. In the end, about seven acres of land burned. Firefighters operated on scene for nearly three hours. The cause is believed to have started from a contained outside fire. Licensing is available upon request by emailing [email protected].
