It opened in 1993 with 21 gates but eventually, that number proved to be inadequate with the sheer increase in traffic at the airport. As part of the airport's mega $8.5 billion "ORD21" expansion project, Terminal 5 will receive a $1 billion upgrade including a new extended area.
