NEW ACTRESS GONG LI ON COLLABORATIONS BETWEEN US AND CHINESE CINEMA

(29 May 2012) GONG LI TALKS U.S./CHINA FILM COLLABORATIONS At the 2012 Cannes Film Festival, L'Oreal Ambassador Gong Li spoke about her upcoming role in Hollywood biopic "Marco Polo." "I will play the role of a Chinese empress," Gong said. "The whole thing is set out in Inner Mongolia, and I'm still reading the script right now. I'm really excited in the prospect of being able to make this film and a Chinese U.S. joined project, with the best producers and the best director of the United States." Whilst the cultures of the two territories move closer, the award-winning actress believes there is still scope for Chinese filmmakers to learn from their American counterparts. "Nowadays there are less and less differences because China is also internationalizing itself, so in terms of production for instance, less and less difference," she compares. "Of course, when we talk about techniqual aspects, Chinese filmmakers are less exquisite than American filmmakers. And of course another difference is that you have to make the whole film in English - those who are working on the set also have to be fluent in English, so it's a good challenge to Chinese working in the film industry." The joy of learning a new language is reciprocated. "Everyone becomes good friends, and American directors and film producers also more and more fond of Chinese culture, more and more proud of learning Chinese," Gong enthuses. And the actress already has her eye on another language: "I think one day I will also learn some French," she finishes.
