On February 28, 2020, the Smithsonian Institution hosted the symposium, “Current Approaches to the Conservation of Conflict-Affected Heritage.” This conference brought together panelists who have addressed conflict-affected heritage through collaborative interventions, developing on-the-ground responses, or conducting much needed basic scientific studies. It was organized by the Smithsonian Cultural Rescue Initiative, the Smithsonian’s Museum Conservation Institute, and the International Council of Museum Disaster Resilient Museum Committee and supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Session 2: International Exchange, Conservation Training, and Salvage in Iraq and Beyond Nimrud Rescue Kent Severson, Shangri La Museum of Islamic Art, Culture & Design Kent Severson is the Conservator at Shangri La Museum of Islamic Art Culture & Design in Honolulu, Hawai`i, where he is responsible for overseeing the care and preservation of Shangri La’s collection of Islamic art. He is a graduate of the NYU conservation training program and was formerly in private practice, in Boston, Massachusetts. Severson has participated in active archaeological excavations in Turkey, Greece, Italy and Egypt. In 2010 and 2011 he was a Visiting Instructor for the Iraqi Institute for the Conservation of Antiquities and Heritage (IICAH) in Erbil, Iraq. He returned to the IICAH in 2016 and, since 2017, Shangri La has been a Collaborator in the Smithsonian Institution Nimrud Rescue and Mosul Museum recovery projects in Nineveh province.
