When a new wedding planner gets the first consultation with a bridal couple it can be quite a daunting prospect, and it is then that they realise they actually have to be a wedding planner. Prior communication with potential clients beforehand is helpful, so you have a little bit of information beforehand. Look at sending a questionnaire in advance, especially if they are keen to meet you quickly, which gives them something to focus on and think about prior to the meeting. Give them some information first to try and build a little bit of a relationship with them. Remember they don't know how many weddings you've done, so have confidence in yourself and your abilities. Make your bridal client feel comfortable, put them at their ease and get them talking about themselves. Where they met, what their likes and dislikes are as a couple etc. Don't prepare a speech or script as it sounds pre-prepared and not genuine. Give them some guidance and information but don't give too much away. This isn't the time to give them all your pearls of wisdom but more a fact finding mission. Ask them to think about weddings they've been to, what they liked about them and what they remembered as this always helps. Don't get too much information. You don't want every detail at this point. Just three things that they both really want, which is often difficult as they both have different priorities, but there is always some middle ground.
